Fitting a Powerchip Ford EEC Module

There are certain procedures and precautions that you must take when fitting an EEC module to an ECU. If you do not stick to the list below, you may cause irreparable damage to the ECU or EEC module.

  1. Switch OFF the ignition and remove the ignition key
  2. Remove the ECU from the vehicle.
  3. Open and remove the casing of the ECU .
  4. Check if the ECU needs any links added (see below).
  5. Remove any grease and/or laquer that may be on the edge connector.
  6. Clean up the edge connector with scotch brite or fine emery paper.
  7. Ensure that the edge connector is perfectly clean.
  8. Discard the black plastic blanking plate, which covers the edge connector
  9. Refit the ECU casing.
  10. Fit the EEC module to the ECU edge connector (see below)
  11. Secure EEC module to the ECU using tape (see below)
  12. Ensure that the key is not in the ignition.
  13. Refit the ECU to the vehicle.

Fitting the EEC module to the ECU

Fit the EEC module to the ECU as shown in the following photographs. First, fill up any gap between the EEC module and the ECU casing with cardboard etc. :

Then secure the EEC module to the ECU with tape to prevent the EEC module falling off the ECU edge connector due to vibration :

Precautions

Do not try to fit or remove a module from an ECU whilst the ignition is switched ON.

Try not apply any up/down bending forces onto the EEC module while it is being fitted to the ECU, this will damage the connector. Care must be taken not to bend the module on the edge connector when using tape to secure it to the ECU.

FORD EEC ECU links

Some later FORD EECV ECUs need to have electrical links fitted. The ECU cannot have an EEC module fitted until this is done. If an EEC module is fitted to an ECU without links fitted, the vehicle will not start. There should be no damage caused to either ECU or EEC module if an attempt is made to fit an EEC module without the links fitted but it is best not to try it!

If your vehicle requires these links to be made we will inform you before processing your order just in case you do not want to get involved in soldering!

Obviously, care should be taken to ensure that the links are only fitted to the correct areas on the ECUs circuit board. Links fitted to any other areas of the circuit board may cause permanent damage to the ECU.

The links are made by

  1. Identifying the section of circuit board to fit the links to.
  2. Removing any laquer from the circuit board pads.
  3. Soldering lengths of wire from one pad to another.

There are 4 pads which are of interest, these should be connected as shown in the picture below. There are small variations in exact location of these pads, but they are all roughly in the same place, on the underside of the printed circuit board. The links are always made left to right as shown.
